Weekend in Photos: January 5-7

Happy Monday everyone, and I hope 2018 is treating you well!

I’m revisiting my Weekend in Photos tradition I started last month once again. I love having this space to reflect on the parts of my weekend that stand out. It brings more meaning to having time off and reminds me I don’t spend all of my time working!

Friday

You’ve probably heard all about the massive winter storms that hit the East coast late last week. Here in London, Ontario we also got some massive winter weather – though on a more common scale. The past month we’ve seen so much snowfall that has been unprecedented for me. Friday we had a lot of snow coming down as well, and it was coming down fast – a typical whiteout, where you can only see a few meters in front of you. We also had extreme cold warnings as with the windchill it was around -30 Celsius (-22 Fahrenheit).

I had plans to go to the gym after work and get one last workout in before the weekend began, but with the weather thought it best to head home straight after work. It was a good call, as the weather only worsened into the evening. I had a few precious moments with Rachel before she went to work for the night.

I’ve been re watching The Office (US) for the past few months in the evenings Rachel is working. Friday night was a hard one for sleeping and I ended up being awake until around 3am…so I watched a lot of The Office and made it through the majority of Season 9. I love this series and how realistic yet crazy it is!

Saturday

The new B&W Mocha at Starbucks

With the lack of sleep on Friday night, my Saturday schedule was totally messed up. We woke up around 12:00pm and had breakfast (for me, a nice green smoothie with added flax). I spent an hour at the mall trying to exchange a sweater I’d gotten from Roots for Christmas. The cashier messed up the return and it ended up going back to the person who got me the gift…which meant I was out of a gift. I was very upset in the moment, though I was able to get an eTransfer from the giftor in the amount of the sweater so I could go and buy another one.

I worked in customer service for 7 years and I know how hard it is to deal with angry customers, especially when you’re actually the one at fault. So I held in my feelings and opted to just leave the store and cool down in my own time. I headed to Starbucks to wait for Rachel to finish chores at her Mom’s house and ordered a new menu item, the B&W Mocha. It’s dark and white chocolate instead of their usual mocha, which added a nice flavour. I enjoyed it a lot, but it was very rich and is not something I could drink every day!

Roasted Acorn Squash, Yum and Yummer

We went home and did a few things around the house. I decided I would spend some time in the kitchen trying a new recipe. I received a cookbook, Yum and Yummer, for Christmas with some good recipes to try. I cooked Roasted Acorn Squash, a vegetarian dish with Moroccan flavours. I was nervous about the recipe since it’s pretty far out of my comfort zone, but it turned out well! It was surprisingly filling. I used 1/2 the recommended amount of maple syrup and found the balance between sweet and savoury was perfect.

Saturday night after Rachel left for work, I finished The Office and headed to bed.

Sunday

Lots of chores on Sunday, including grocery shopping, cleaning, meal prepping, and the like. I also baked a batch of chocolate chip cookies that turned out well. I received a hand mixer for Christmas that came in really handy!

We went to an Open House in the afternoon. I have been constantly watching real estate listings in my city over the past few weeks as we approach the time when we can afford to purchase a home. We are awaiting confirmation of our preapproved mortgage before we sign on with a realtor and begin looking in earnest, but for the time being we have been keeping tabs on places opening up around the city. I might do a blog post about the process so far – let me know in the comments if you’d like to hear it!

I ordered a new pair of running shoes to take with me to the gym and to a conference I’m attending at the end of the month. I tried on a pair at the mall the previous day, but they didn’t have my size. In 2018 I’m trying to spend less and really focus my intentions before purchasing an item. I’m happy to report that I feel this pair of shoes is a good addition to my wardrobe and I found it at a bargain price!

The Golden Globes were on Sunday night and Rachel and I watched as we started a puzzle and ate cookies. I’m not a huge fan of award shows so I wasn’t too captivated, but it was something to watch at least. It was nice to finally have a night to relax with Rachel after she worked all weekend.

Final Thoughts

My weekend was pretty quiet and a little boring, but sometimes that can be a good thing after the business of the holidays. Next weekend we have a family gathering, and Rachel is off work more often so I’m looking forward to that!
